Thelonious Monk

In Walked Bud

A tribute to Bud Powell, the pianist who died young and who, along with Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and others, developed the style of be bop, a consciously black alternative to the dominant swing of Benny Goodman, Glen Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Count Basie and Duke Ellington. None of this took place in concerts, but in jam sessions where the musicians would get together after their official gigs and play the 'new' together.

At first I couldn't believe my ears when Roy Haynes' drum solo was so melodious.
